Wellington – Discover the heart of the Cape Winelands
The quaint and lesser known town of Wellington is a mere 45 minutes from Cape Town and within close proximity of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. It offers a compact 26-member wine route comprising of 3 producer cellars, proud wine estates, a sprinkling of garagiste and 5 potstill brandy producers, all within easy driving distance from one another. Flanked by the imposing Hawequa and Groenberg mountains, visitors are able to lose themselves amongst lush and pampered vineyards, Cape Dutch homesteads, historical buildings and monuments – each sharing its own story.
In the last couple of years, Wellington has received an impressive array of accolades for their wines, locally and abroad. In the recent SA Terroir Awards, Wellington was named Top Wine Area 2010. Thanks to the ‘stokkies’ industry or rootstock nursery, the Val du Charron or Valley of the Wagonmakers can truly make the claim that all excellent wines can trace their origins to Wellington.
Part of the charm is of this town with the heart of wine is that it wants to be discovered. Here you can shake hands with the winemaker, sip and swirl extraordinary wines in unspoiled surrounds, meet some fascinating characters and enjoy a number of wine events throughout the year.
